With the weather getting warmer, now is a good time to go online and treat yourself to a new pair of sunglasses. It does not matter whether you like classic looks or want something a bit different, this year, you are spoiled with all the available options.

It’s easy to find the sunglasses you need with the click of a few buttons – you don’t have to compromise on style. However, it is important to remember that when it comes to sunglasses, you need to get ones that protect your eyes, as well as completing your outfit. Below are some things to consider.

Buying sunglasses to protect your eyesight

Sunglasses play a vital role in protecting your eyes from the sun, and to some extent, pollution. Studies are starting to indicate that the more the planet warms, the more we will need the protection of good quality sunglasses.

How sunlight can damage your eyes

Prolonged exposure to UV light has the potential to damage our eyes. Too much UVA light puts you at a far greater risk of developing macular degeneration and/or cataracts.

UVB is what causes your skin to burn when you spend too much time in the sun. It dries out your eyes badly, stripping away much of the moisture that protects them from the effects of pollution. That feels uncomfortable and means that your delicate eyes are more prone to damage when they are exposed to high levels of UVB.

Buying sunglasses that offer adequate UV protection

In many countries, governments have instituted standards that sunglass manufacturers must adhere to. At least when it comes to the level of UV protection that the lenses offer.

Getting the frame style and fit right

If your glasses are not comfortable, the chances of you wearing them when you are outside are quite low. Therefore, it’s important to choose a pair that you like, and fit well. Choose a style that fits your personal aesthetic, goes with the way you dress, and suits your face shape.

For optimal eye protection, a frame shape that fits the contours of your face closely is best. If you want to wear a pair of sunglasses that don’t fit this way, wearing a hat with a wide brim helps to provide some extra eye protection.

Lens color and finish

Glare can an issue because it puts your eyes under more strain. Lenses come in so many colors and finishes these days. However, grey lenses tend to be the best at reducing glare, so they could be your best bet for all purpose sunglasses.

Scratches are distracting and can also lead to eyestrain, so do your best to take care of your glasses. Keep them in a case when you are not wearing them and choose a durable finish. Especially if your job makes it more likely that you will damage your glasses.

If you want to learn more about the role that sunglasses play in protecting your eyes, this short article is a good source of information.
