I Have a New Addiction – Toddlers and Tiaras

Toddlers and Tiaras

I am a huge fan of trash TV.  I’m not ashamed to admit it, either.  I love me some of the Real Housewives, the Real World/Road Rules Challenges, and those kind of reality tv shows and docudramas.  And I can’t forget Maury Povich.  YOU ARE NOT THE FATHER!

But I now have a new love.  Oh yes.  I have just started watching Toddlers and Tiaras.  I know you’re asking me “Geez, that shows only been on for like 4 years.  What took you so long?”   Well, a few things.  One, I don’t have cable, and haven’t for a long time.  They don’t carry Center Ice, so I don’t feel the need to pay for it.  Simple, really. Two, I got all sucked in to being judgmental and thinking “oh, those poor little kids and the bad parents.”

Eden Wood Showgirl Costume

And then…the epiphany.  I saw that Toddlers & Tiaras was streaming on Amazon Prime.  Well then.  I would just watch a couple of episodes and see what the fuss was about.   I have to say, I really haven’t seen anything too scandalous yet.  Besides Eden Wood and her over the top Showgirl costume.  Seriously, that thing is ahhhh-mazing!  Granted, I’ve only watched 3 seasons or so, and from what I’ve heard, the scandalous costumes don’t start until later seasons.

One of the things that amazes me is the skill that some of the parents have.  I was watching one episode  and the people were from Utah.  The mom had quit her job to go to one of the cosmetology schools in Provo, Utah.  Just so she could do her kid’s hair and makeup!  Can you imagine?  It’s difficult enough to do an adult’s hair and makeup, but can you imagine putting that on a squirmy kid?  So I guess it makes sense, and she could probably pick up some other gigs at the pageants.  But still…

I guess I don’t see Toddlers & Tiaras as scandalous, because it’s not that different than other competitions, save for the beauty aspect.  As far as the parents go, they‘re over the top, but not that out of line for people in a competitive hobby.  If you’ve ever been around the competitive sport, or Olympic hopeful, parents, you know what I mean.
