When we were kids, we were told that cereal was healthy for us. We ate cereal by the bowl full. We even had cereal for a snack. Then, when we were older, it was announced that hey, maybe cereal isn’t the best thing for us to have. For me, this came when I was in college. We still ate it by the bowl full, as we were college kids. Only now we’d have cereal for dinner.
Now that I’m a full-fledged adult, cereal is good for you again. One of the main reasons is that whole grains are being used. This is important, as highly processed grains have become more commonplace over the years. When food is processed, it strips the nutrients out. General Mills is one of the leaders in this arena. They have changed the main ingredient in their cereals to whole grains instead of the highly processed grains that had become popular.
How do you tell if your food has whole grains? That’s a really good question. General Mills cereals have a white checkmark on the box for their whole grain items. Another way to find out is to read the ingredient list. You want to look for items that specifically state “whole grain _____” like “whole grain wheat” or “whole grain oats.” The higher up on the ingredient list, the better. Ingredients are listed in order of most to least on food packaging.
You can also get additional whole grains into your diet by making small changes. Try substituting whole wheat pasta for your regular pasta, brown rice for white, or purchasing whole wheat bread.
